Gerard Damianos DEEP THROAT verleiht dem White-Coater-Genre, einer Reihe meist paternalistischer, pseudo-aufklärerischer Sexfilme im medizinischen Gewand, eine subversive Wendung. Hier rückt die Suche nach weiblicher Lust ins Zentrum des Universums, als Linda Lovelace entdeckt, dass ihre Klitoris in ihrem Hals sitzt.
Was als ultimativer Gimmick zur Präsentation eines ganz besonderen Talents funktioniert, setzte zugleich Ideen frei, die sich in immer neue Diskurse verzweigten: Von weiblicher sexueller Befreiung über den Anti-Porno-Feminismus der PorNO-Bewegung bis hin zum kurzlebigen Kulturphänomen des Porno Chic. Seine Produktionsgeschichte ist bis heute voller Mythen und unbequemer Wahrheiten, sein Text ambivalent. Der Film trug maßgeblich dazu bei, die heutigen Porn Studies zu begründen, ist aber auch ein überraschendes Seherlebnis: mal surreal, mal cartoonartig, mal ziemlich süß, und getragen von einem tollen Ensemble aus Profis und Laien.

Few films have shaped the history of pornography, and arguably of cinema itself, as much as this one. We are excited to show it to you on actual 16mm film. Gerard Damiano’s DEEP THROAT puts a subversive twist on the white-coater, a cycle of mostly paternalistic, pseudo-educational sex films with a medical framing. Here, the search for female pleasure becomes the center of the universe, as Linda Lovelace discovers that her clitoris is located in her throat.
What works as the ultimate gimmick for showing off a very particular talent also set off ideas that spun into ever-multiplying discourses: from female sexual liberation to the anti-pornography feminism of the PorNO movement to the short-lived cultural phenomenon of porn chic. Its production history is still rife with myths and uncomfortable truths, and its text remains ambivalent. The film helped lay the foundations of modern porn studies, yet it is also a surprising watch: at times surreal, at times cartoonish, at times disarmingly sweet, and carried by a terrific ensemble of professionals and newcomers.
